Cardsharing is how a satellite or cable receiver decrypts channels by fetching the decryption key from a server over the internet, instead of reading it from a smartcard inside the box. Everything else on this page explains that one sentence.

How it works, step by step

Encrypted channels are scrambled with a key that changes every few seconds. Normally a smartcard in the receiver holds the subscription and produces that key. Cardsharing moves the card to a server and delivers the key over the internet:

  1. Your receiver tries to open an encrypted channel and needs the current key.
  2. It sends a small request (an ECM) to the server your line points at.
  3. The server produces the key (a Control Word) and sends it back.
  4. Your receiver uses the key to decode the picture, and repeats this every few seconds as the key rotates.

All of this happens in a fraction of a second, so the channel stays live and switching feels normal.
